For some people, fat freezing done by a professional is too expensive. They opt for DIY fat freezing, that is, they try to do it at home by themselves.
That’s not such a good idea. Let’s see why.
During fat freezing process, you expose a certain body area to the temperature low enough to freeze fat, but it must not be too cold because it will damage the skin.
In animal studies, there was a reduction in fat when areas were exposed to 31 degrees Fahrenheit for ten minutes. Although, this temperature is too cold.
One human study, using the CoolSculpting patent with the temperature of 11 degrees Fahrenheit, yielded positive results.
The safest temperature is 11 degrees (although it can range from 10-15 degrees). This is cold enough so fat can freeze, but is safe for the skin. It’s possible to use colder temperature, but there’s a risk of frostbite.
It’s also relevant what the temperature of the skin is during the treatment.
DIY CoolSculpting at home has the same principles as the treatments that FDA has approved -- cold temperatures to reduce fat. But, when you do it by yourself, you must stay on the safe side. You have to make sure that the device is properly applied and firmly secured.
If you have any medical condition like cold urticaria, cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, check with your doctor before doing DIY fat freezing.
The problem is that you can’t control the temperature by yourself at home. What you can do the most, is to have the cold temperature, but not reducing the fat. If you would succeed to freeze your fat cells, you would at the same time freeze your muscles, skin and nerves, causing permanent damage.
Although on the internet you can find a lot of those who promise great results with DIY fat freezing, there is no scientific proof that any of their fat-reducing methods really work.
CoolSculpting technology has been proven to be safe and effective, and FDA has approved it. It also has such design to reach the maximum of fat in a certain area. It uses special vacuum applicator which pulls the tissue close to chilling plates, as to reach more fat cells.
An ice pack that you use at home can’t do that!
DIY fat freezing also doesn’t work because you must have a trained professional who knows exactly how and how long to use applicators for optimal reduction of the fat. It is definitely better to pay more to be on the safe side.
Also, not everyone is a suitable candidate. It has to be evaluated by a professional. He/she will see whether CoolSculpting is the best option for you.
